When People Forget Your Kindness

Genesis 50:20-21 (NLT)
“You intended to harm me, but God intended it all for good. He brought me to this position so I could save the lives of many people. No, don’t be afraid. I will continue to take care of you and your children.” So he reassured them by speaking kindly to them.

Devotional Thought:
Few things sting more deeply than being forgotten by those you once helped. When you love, give, serve, or support someone from a sincere place—and they overlook it or walk away—it’s easy to feel discouraged or even bitter.

Joseph understood this pain. Sold into slavery by his own brothers, imprisoned unjustly, forgotten by the cupbearer after helping him—he had every reason to become hardened by betrayal. Yet Joseph remained faithful. And in due time, God brought him out of prison and into the palace.

Joseph didn’t just interpret Pharaoh’s dream—he offered wisdom and a plan. His gift made room for him, but it was his character that kept him in position. Thirteen long years of preparation shaped him into the man God could trust to carry out a nation-saving plan.

When Joseph faced the same brothers who betrayed him, he could’ve responded with vengeance. Instead, he responded with vision. He saw the big picture. What man meant for harm, God used for good.

This serves as a reminder that people will be people. People may forget you, but God doesn’t. Despite Joseph’s help, the cupbearer forgot. The bible goes on to say that two full years had passed. It may have seemed like Joseph had no hope in getting out, but what we need to understand is that delays are sometimes necessary divine setups for God to eventually get you ready for promotion. God’s plan includes timing you may not understand at the moment, but be assured today that the palace experience is coming.

The effects of when people forget your kindness. It can cut deep, especially when you operate from a space of genuineness, and people take advantage of that. People will hurt us and disappoint us. I’m pretty sure we’ve all been in a space where we felt like we were used, especially when we operated from a space of genuine kindness. When trouble comes, people will forget all the good and act like you never existed and like you never did good. Just remember, when people forget your kindness, God doesn’t.

Life Application:

  1. Remain faithfuleven when forgotten. God sees you.
  2. Develop your character.Your gift can open the door, but integrity will keep you in the room.
  3. Trust God’s timing.Delays are not denials. Every experience is shaping you.
  4. Forgive quickly.Don’t let bitterness steal your blessing. Speak kindly—even to those who didn’t do the same for you.

Prayer:
Lord, thank You for never forgetting me. When others overlook my efforts or walk away, remind me that You see every act of kindness and every sacrifice made in love. Help me stay faithful, even in seasons of delay. Develop my character, refine my heart, and use every experience—good and bad—for Your glory. Teach me to forgive like Joseph did, and to trust that You’re working all things for my good. In Jesus’ name, amen.
